Amazing things happen when good people join forces.
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity is a wonderful group of men who do great work in the community. One of their projects is mentoring boys at John Early Middle School. My friend, Preston Bailey, is one of those mentors and, through CRC, he also brings new school supplies to the school. Some of the Omega Psi Phi members and I were at John Early last week delivering supplies when I overheard a teacher ask one of the counselors, “Do you know where we can get shoes? Some of the children are still coming to school without shoes.”
Well, that just broke my heart. So I came back to the warehouse and reached out to Claire McCall at Genesco. Her heart was broken, too. Not a day or two later, she e-mailed me to say there were 79 pairs of new shoes waiting for us to pick up. And socks. They came to the CRC warehouse for about 10 minutes before going to John Early, maybe the quickest turn-around of anything ever donated to CRC.
Omega Psi Phi and Genesco – good people coming together to fix a terrible problem that should never be visited upon anyone, but especially not children. Thanks to Omega Psi Phi for being boots on the ground in the war against poverty. And thanks to Genesco for a warm heart and a generous spirit.
